I Finally Got a Sequencer

As I previously mentioned before, I've been on the lookout for a sequencer, the Doepfer A-155 in particular since the Milton is vaporware for the most part. I actually lost an auction one two weeks ago on ebay, and had been waiting for another to show up.

Then, yesterday, I saw a post to the AH list (I'm just a lurker, not a member) from a guy who was looking to sell one, and he was in Santa Cruz! I went and got it on my lunch break, and pretty much started at it on and off for the rest of the day. I ended up being at work until pretty late so it was about 10pm before I actually got around to plugging it in.

Before hooking it up though, I thought I would give organizing the "portable" system a shot. It wasn't really working out...I couldn't fit all that I wanted into 1 A-100P case...not with the Sequencer. If it was like 12HP or so smaller, then *maybe*. So I'll be starting on a custom case ASAP. With the Sequencer installed, I'm down to 22HP free.

So anyway, everything I said about not wanting a sequencer was simply uneducated bullshit rationalization on my part. I LOVE the sequencer...I think want two now! Just having one row patched to a 2 OSC FM sound was fantastic fun. I played around with it for about 3 hours, trying different clock sources, messing with using one of the trigger rows patched into the sequencer Reset to play with the sequence length in realtime, etc, but I think I've only just broken the surface of using this in patches. The A-154 controller will no doubt be in my future as well, especially if I decide on picking up a second A-155.

I did leave a patch up that I did at the end of the night, I just didn't record it; I'll do that tonight and update the post here with the audio.

Nice, looks fun. I remember your post about not wanting a sequencer, I thought that was crazy talk. :) I love space rock like Tangerine Dream and Robert Rich. In fact, I just ordered my first modules: two oscillators and two sequencers. I went overkill in the other direction...

(MOTM 300s and CGS Sequential Switches, if you're curious)

Yeah it turns out it was just crazy talk; I love this thing. I too want a second one. I'm hoping to get some hands on time with the Livewire Chaos Computer @ NAMM this year and that will be the deciding factor if I need two sequencers or not.

I had never known about the CGS Sequential Switch until yesterday. The guy I bought the A-155 from was selling it because he now had 3 CGS Sequential Switches.

They're fun, ain't they? I don't have a nice analog one (yet), but the FR Mobius is still a blast, especially to use it in strange ways.
It adds a whole lot to a small system-- you'll have a blast, Synthetic.

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to hearing any made with the aid of the sequencer...

you bastard
i was going to grab that sequencer from the AH guy , you are so lucky i live on the otherside of the planet or else I'd come knocking on your door :-)

I snagged one of these from AH and its partner (a-154). When their forces unite, they formmmmmMMM!!!!... a pretty nice sequencer. I'm a big fan of random voltages/sequencers. I dont think you need two sequencers, there is a dual/quad sequencer switch that will maximize both rows. If you spend your money towards the supplemental modules, I think it would be more versatile than another sequencer. Eat my two cents!!

@ross - Sorry!

@surachai - Man if they combined to form Voltron, I would be all over it! ;) I keep checking out the A-154 and it seems like a good expansion to the sequencer. I could definitely see making use of the random mode and maybe reverse and pendulum mode. Having a built-in clock which has CV control is cool, but I can use a regular LFO to do the same thing. If I did get a second sequencer, I'll definitely get it.

You've got a TKB?! Well then, maybe I'm not so sorry I took that A-155 from you! ;)

I really wanted the Milton too, but I'm tired of waiting for it and I liked the hold+glide features of the A-155.
